Pure Quantum States Are Fundamental, Mixtures (Composite States) Are Mathematical Constructions: An Argument Using Algorithmic Information Theory

چکیده
From the philosophical viewpoint, two interpretations of the quantum measurement process are possible: According to the first interpretation, when we measure an observable, the measured system moves into one of the eigenstates of this observable (“the wave function collapses”); in other words, the Universe “branches” by itself, due to the very measurement procedure, even if we do not use the result of the measurement. According to the second interpretation, the system simply moves into a mixture of eigenstates, and the actual “branching” occurs only when an observer reads the measurement results. According to the first interpretation, a mixture is a purely mathematical construction, and in the real physical world, a mixture actually means that the system is in one of the “component” states. In this paper, we analyze this difference from the viewpoint of the algorithmic information theory; as a result of this analysis, we argue that only pure quantum states are fundamental, while mixtures are simply useful mathematical constructions.

Error in an argument regarding “improper” mixtures
t wt |φt 〉〈φt | represents a system which, with probability wj , is “really in” one or another of the pure states |φj 〉. In quantum mechanics, mixtures are thought to arise in two ways — as a direct mixing of distinct pure-state preparations, and “improperly” (d’Espagnat’s term), as the reduction of a pure-state composite system to the state of a component system by tracing out the other compon...
متن کاملQuantum Kolmogorov Complexity Based on Classical Descriptions
We develop a theory of the algorithmic information in bits contained in an individual pure quantum state. This extends classical Kolmogorov complexity to the quantum domain retaining classical descriptions. Quantum Kolmogorov complexity coincides with the classical Kolmogorov complexity on the classical domain. Quantum Kolmogorov complexity is upper bounded and can be effectively approximated f...

Quantum fisher information of a parameter characterizing the sensitivity of a state with respect to parameter changes. In this paper, we study the quantum fisher information of the W state for four, five, six and seven particles in decoherence channels, such as amplitude damping, phase damping and depolarizing channel. Using Krauss operators for decoherence channels components, we investigate t...

Quantum mechanics of composite systems, gives rise to certain special states called entangled states. A physical system, that is in an entangled state displays an intricate correlation between its subsystems. There are also some composite quantum states (classically correlated states or separable states) that are not entangled. It is generally claimed, often without a rigorous proof to support,...
متن کاملSingular Perturbation Theory in Output Feedback Control of Pure-Feedback Systems
This paper studies output feedback control of pure-feedback systems with immeasurable states and completely non-affine property. Since availability of all the states is usually impossible in the actual process, we assume that just the system output is measurable and the system states are not available. First, to estimate the immeasurable states a state observer is designed. Relatively fewer res...
